Moist Mulch is AMAZING at protecting your substrate and the microbes within it from harsh UV light and heat and, as the name suggests, it's excellent at keeping your growing medium moist to help ensure your living soil is as healthy and active as possible. The results are really impressive when used with our Auto or Veg soils.
Our Moist Mulch is made from anaerobically produced fibrous material which is a mix of rye, maize, barley and grass; it's been sterilised by fermentation and certified organic by the Soil Association.
It's more than just a mulch!
It makes a fantastic addition to any soil mix by increasing plant available organic matter: as its been pre-fermented, when wet it breaks down really rapidly to become valuable humus in your growing medium.
If using as a mulch, the top will remain dry and therefore not break down as fast, but over time it will be gradually mineralised by soil microbes (and particularly worms if you have them in your pot/ bed).
How to use it
Mulch - we suggest it should be spread on the top of your pot/ bed to a thickness of about 3 cm's.
Quantities to order will vary according to pot dimensions but if spreading to a depth of around 3cm's you'll need about 3l per 20L pot. This provides a nice thick layer over the surface. As the mulch is broken down over time you can top up with more as needed.
Soil additive - it should be added when first mixing your substrate, to a maximum of 20% of the total volume. It'll help the soil heat up and will be broken down fast by microorganisms. It's wonderful stuff!
Packaging
We sell this in 5L or 10L kraft paper bags which may absorb some of the moisture, so in order to avoid the bag losing its integrity, the mulch should be used or transferred to another container within 3 weeks of the date of receipt.
